From Here to Eternity
CAMBRIDGE, MAJuly 31, 2001If you really
want to spread the word, you shouldn't let a little thing like distance
deter you. Jack Cunningham didn't.
"We recognize the need to make our academic programs,
as well as our Christian worldview, available to students regardless
of their location," Jack Cunningham, Director of Distance Education
for The Baptist College of Florida (Graceville), states. The solution
is distance learning, and Jenzabar has been the key to making this
happen. And not just for students.
"With Jenzabar's portal and course management software,
we're able to recruit adjunct professors from all over the country
to teach courses," Dr. Cunningham notes. "There's really no restriction
on who can be asked to teach or where those experts may be. We are
able to hire the ideal person for the course. Allžhundreds of miles
from the college. They could not commute, and we could not afford
to bring them here."
The college has also experienced a number of other
benefits. "This is the most intuitive system we've ever used," Dr.
Cunningham remarks. "Students seem more interested now in what they
are learning. They are able to learn more in a shorter time. Since
they are having fun with the learning process they spend more time
studying, which makes them better students. They can talk with each
other and compare class notes in chat rooms. More and more students
are now asking for the college to put more classes on Jenzabar."
Jenzabar has provided the capability for both resident
and non-resident students to share resources and dialogue. "It allows
the resident professor to establish small-group assignments," Dr.
Cunningham observes, "with the software facilitating communications
between students who don't need to be physically in each other's
presence. Each group can observe the progress of other groups without
interfering. The courseware allows us to provide a central repository
for online resources - the Web links and library links that supplement
our courses."
Teachers can evaluate students' online work in progress
and offer constructive feedback, rather than waiting until assignments
have been completed.
In addition to the academic advantages, Jenzabar's
software integration encompasses the Elite™ administrative
system the college uses. Thus, portal, administrative, and course
management software all combine to provide increased productivity.
Jenzabar has made it possible for The Baptist College,
entering the 21st century, to remain true to the vision and commitment
of its founders more than half a century ago. And in the process,
it has added a lot of value for administrators, teachers, and students
alike. "We are a small school, with limited resources," Dr. Cunningham
states, "and Jenzabar has opened an entire new vista of teaching
capability for us."
