Pre-Conference Sessions

JAM 2007 features a wide range of in-depth hands-on labs and seminar-style pre-conference sessions. All pre-conference labs and seminars are half-day sessions that will be held on Wednesday, May 30. Pre-conference sessions may be selected during registration or if you have already registered, you may add it by modifying your existing registration.

Cognos Web Reporting
This hands-on lab will provide a detailed overview using the Cognos 7.4 Web-based reporting and analysis tools, including Impromptu Web Reports (IWR), Cognos Query, and PowerPlay. Topics will include: Introduction to Cognos web portal Upfront; Open, save, export Impromptu Web Reports; Create, save, modify, export Cognos Query; & Overview of PowerPlay Web multidimensional analysis.

System Wide Security
This hands-on lab will cover all aspects of EX security from SQL logins, roles, and permissions, to EX Tasklist users, groups, permissions, to third party access from InfoMaker, Access, Excel, to EX specialized internal security for General Ledger, Notepad, Advising, Registration, etc. This will be an in-depth session to address all of your concerns and questions related to EX security and how to implement the various pieces of the process. Attendees will get handouts of the slides and other documentation, as well as scripts to use at their installation.

An Intro to SQL Language
This hands-on lab is an excellent way for you to develop a stronger foundation in working with SQL Language. This session will focus on SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE Statements, as well as JOINS, UNIONS, and much more.

Implementing JICS 6.4 for IT
A comprehensive look at the key items IT/Database administrators will want to learn more about, and keep in mind as they begin planning & implementing JICS, version 6.4. Topics will include: Backups – Adam, SQL and JICS application files; ADAM; Hardware configuration/requirements and overview; The API; SQL setup and database overview; Discuss Windows and SQL updates; and Reporting Services addition in 6.4. Advising A to Z
A start to finish look at how to configure, implement, and facilitate the Advising Module. This is a great session for folks just starting to utilize the system, or for those veterans wanting to catch-up with newer, or underutilized functionality. Topics will include: review of key terms and functional items; helpful hints for more effectively building Trees; in-depth discussion about catalog, curriculum, and technology; identifying key steps in more efficiently facilitating AV; utilizing the automated process for migrating data from RE to AV; reviewing Course Needs functionality; creating an Action Plan for implementing on campus, and identifying potential “stumbling blocks.”

Cognos Web Server Administrator

This session will provide a detailed overview for setting up the Cognos 7.4 Web products in a Windows 2003 or XP environment. Working with Notepad
This seminar provides a comprehensive look at Notepad, and is a great session for institutions with end users who are new to Notepad, looking for a refresher, or looking to pick up a particular piece of the functionality. An Intro to Communications Management
This session will go over tickler and look at an example tickler strategy. In the Admissions office, a simple tickler strategy might use one contact to create a letter, update the student's admissions status, and then tell the Tickler program to schedule a series of contacts for letter generation. Other offices might use a contact in a similar way to generate and process letters without updating status records. An Intro to C# for Portlet Development
This is a great session for those looking forward to creating and maintaining custom portlets in JICS, but would like a stronger foundation in C# - the primary coding language in creating your own portlets. While this is not a comprehensive C# course, fundamentals concepts will be discussed, and this is a great seminar to determine if you are ready to begin designing your own custom portlets.
Please Note: While not required, some previous programming experience will be helpful.

Financials & Financial Aid Management
This seminar is a great session for folks looking to get a better understanding of how should these two diverse groups work together? Fundamentals of InfoMaker for TE
This session is for anyone who needs to create reports using InfoMaker in the Jenzabar TE (AS/400) environment. Designed to provide you with the skills necessary to create reports and queries using InfoMaker, topics to be addressed in this class include: General look, feel and navigation of the InfoMaker interface; Creating and running simple reports & queries; and Utilizing TE views. Experience with Jenzabar TE, databases and client/server technology suggested.
